13. a fictional book
I’m going to take a moment and talk Twilight. Let’s get some things straight. First off, this is not good literature. Stephanie Myers is NOT J.K. Rowling. It is written by someone who managed to get a piece of Mary Sue fiction published. It’s not even necessarily Stephanie Myers as Mary Sue. Bella is described looks-wise so little so that any girl reading the books is able to put herself in Bella’s place.
Also, Bella as a role model is a horrible horrible idea, along with idolizing the relationship between Bella and Edward. Sure some of it is cute (dude, who wouldn’t want a guy to compose a song for her?), but some of it…is creepy. She is so completely codependent on Edward. She just wants to spend her life by his side, conforming to what he needs, leaving behind her own friends and family. Its a little bit psychologically abusive.
But goshdarn it, the books are enjoyable if you remember this stuff and don’t take it seriously/desire for a vampire to bite your neck. It’s my version of those trashy romance novels. I don’t long to be Bella, nor am I looking for a sparkle-y vampire to spend my life with.
